Nonwovens production dips in 2009 – EDANA

As per EDANA trade organisation for nonwovens, the 2009 reports for Greater Europe, depict a fall. As per the reports, nonwovens production, by weight, dipped by 6.3 percent since 2008, with only 1.6 billion tons manufactured, owing to challenging economic conditions.

After years of double-digit increase, the weight of nonwovens, as sold to personal care wipes dived in 2009. However, the sale continued to remain stable with respect to surface area and recorded only minimum increase.

Therefore, indicating that, although the overall production figures, by weight, fell down, the level of manufacturing in square metres continued to rise.

As per a comparative study of a selected group of firms in 2008 and 2009, the aggregate price of nonwovens remained almost unaffected between 2008 and 2009.

While in 2009, trade flows for both exports and imports slowed down a little, the EU27 trade balance of nonwoven roll products continued to be optimistic, with respect to both value and volume.

Also, for every nonwoven subcategory, EU27 continued to remain the net exporter. This optimistic trade balance aided in maintaining the unfavourable trade balance of the European textile industry.

But the most obvious fall in terms of tonnage is witnessed in polymer-based (spunmelt) nonwovens. More so, despite a small fall of nearly 2 percent of nonwovens deliveries to the hygiene business, this sector, by far, continued to be the biggest in the industry and raised its market share in weight and surface area, last year.
