Market share of Chinese textile and clothing imports in to the Japanese market is slowly falling. China which has more than an 80 percent market share of Japanese imports from the sector, witnessed a negative growth in its exports to Japan in the first four months of 2010.

Japan's textile and clothing imports from China totaled to US $7.84 billion in the period January to April 2010, Jan.-Apr. 2010, down 4.52 percent year on year and also narrowed by 11.46 percent from the same period of the previous year.

Japanese imports of textiles and garments from Vietnam amounted to $418 million, up 3.59 percent year on year and accounted for 4.08 percent of Japan's total textile and apparel imports, while imports from Thailand stood at $204 million, up 5.52 percent year on year.

Growth in exports from Vietnam has been helped by the Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA) which took effect from October 1, 2009 as the treaty has slashed import duties on a wide range of goods exported to Japan.
