The cotton industry of Ghana, which was affected badly a decade ago, will see revival, as the Vice President, John Dramani Mahama made an announcement of providing GH¢ 3.5 million as financial support for sector's revitalization.

In addition to direct financial support, the cotton farmers would also be provided a GH¢ 1.5 million general subsidy package for the current farming season, announced the Vice President, while launching cotton support program for cotton farmers in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions.

High prices of farming inputs and infertility of soil, gradually reduced cotton industry during the 80s and 90s, which was once, especially during the 60s and 70s, a flourishing industry for the three northern regions.

The farmers will receive financial backup from the government to prepare lands, procure quality seeds, chemicals and fertilizers to raise cotton output to 10,000 hectares to value at 10,000 metric tons, said the Vice President.

The government will determine subsequent projections and assist farmers to revive the industry, if this projection of 10,000 hectares of cotton production sees success, he added.

The three Northern regions can grow sufficient volume of cotton to attain domestic as well as export requirements, while the government is taking efforts to achieve the target in the coming years, said the Vice President.
