Chinese Govt to ensure steady supplies of cotton

China's cotton imports reached 177,000 tons in June, an increase of 9,000 tons or 5.1 percent year on year; but down 21,000 tons or 10.5 percent from the previous month, according to customs statistics.

From January to June, China's total cotton imports touched 1.543 million tons, an increase of 808,000 tons or 109.9 percent, year on year.

As of June, China's total imports of cotton registered 2.105 million tons in the 2009-10 cotton year, an increase of 900,000 tons, or 74.6 percent year on year.

The state increased 868,000 tons of cotton import quotas under sliding tariff on June 25, taking the amount of total released quotas up to 3.6 million tons this year, with the aim to ensure supplies and maintain stable operations.

Meanwhile, the state has intensified coordination arrangements for cotton shipment from Xinjiang. By the end of June, 2.8 million tons of Xinjiang cotton was shipped out from Xinjiang, an increase of 400,000 tons year on year.

The state has developed marketing plan for cotton reserves to be released from warehouses as and when needed, in order to ensure adequate cotton supplies and the plan will be put in to action, according to market demand.
