China will be represented by Shihao Bai, aged 24, a Textile Art and Design student from the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts whose winning piece “Game Folk” uses imagery from ancient Chinese culture and employs original Chinese weaving techniques. Shihao Bai will be joined by India's finalist, 25 year old Swaroopa Adusumilli, a student at the College of Home Science in Nirmala Niketan. Her piece 'Inventions from squander' was inspired by working with local reelers and weavers in rural communities on eco-friendly textile solutions, such as developing hand spun and hand woven fabrics. Last of the international finalists is 23 year old Meng Jing, Singapore's winner from the Lasalle College of the Arts, who impressed the judges at the Singapore heat with her piece 'Fly Eco-Chic'.

The collections produced by each finalist were deemed to be the most innovative and creative of all the entries, showing the student's understanding of social responsibility and the issues which surround the fashion and textiles industry today.

The Society of Dyers and Colourists' will host the nine finalists for three days in October where the students will take part in a series of workshops on textile techniques and technologies before the final judging event on October 5th. Each of the global finalists' work will be exhibited at the event and judged by an industry panel. The global winner will receive the SDC Colour Design Award 2010, with a cash prize of £1000, plus the Veronica Bell Trophy. The trophy is in honour of the late Dr Veronica Bell, (an SDC past-president) to acknowledge excellence in the field of colour and design.

Comments Susie Hargreaves, Chief Executive of the SDC: “We've had a record number of entrants to this year's competition and the submissions are of the highest standard we've seen. We look forward to hosting the students this year and teaching them about the history of the textile industry in this country – which was once a centre for textile production and is still extremely forward-thinking in terms of fashion and textile innovation.”

As the leading educational charity dedicated to advancing the science of colour worldwide, the UK-based SDC, which celebrated its 125th anniversary last year, encourages the creative use of colour in fashion and textile design and is a committed supporter of up and coming young designers.

Continues Susie Hargreaves: “The Society has more than a century's worth of knowledge and experience working within the textile industry and we are especially proud of our role working with young people from around the globe on the science of colour. This competition is a good way to explore the innovative ideas and new technologies used by some of the best student designers who really embrace the use of colour in their designs.”
