Textile, apparel units resume production operations

Textile and apparel production of Haiti has approached pre-earthquake levels, but restoration work is progressing at a snails pace, posing a threat to future competition. According to industry insiders, only 3 percent of the promised international aid, against the disaster, has reached the country.

In the month of January this year, exports to US experienced 50 percent fall, but leveled off during the initial five months and a slight increase can be witnessed in exports this year, as per Executive Vice-President of the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA), Steve Lamar.

Due to production resumption of the biggest factories in the country, production rates are near to pre-earthquake levels, agreed Mesh Gelman, one of the organizers of the Choose Haiti group that promotes made-in-Haiti products.

Last year, country exported 237 million square metres of textile to the US market, which is the country's biggest buyer. The textile industry of the country, which mainly manufactures T-shirts, innerwear and uniforms, is really imperative as it accounts for 75 percent of the overall exports and its sales are estimated at $120 - $150 million.

The powerful earthquake occurred last January, taking toll on a number of factories and thereby on jobs. However, now Lamar is hoping that, the country will witness good times, especially with the new trade legislation to stimulate US exports, and with the growing interest from US and other international brands to source in Haiti.
