THE KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism has extended a helping hand to the retrenched textile workers. It has infused a massive sum of R30 million in the industry.
A once dazzling and competitive textile industry today is facing a huge number of lay-offs. These retrenchments are also due to cheap goods coming in to the country from China, and also due to the fact that most of the machineries are outdated.
Department MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu said that, the involvement was mainly intended at realizing the broad-based economic empowerment policy (BBEE), by means of the cooperatives included in the proviso for sustainable employment.
Moreover, it will also help boost the participation of the earlier marginalized individuals in the textile and clothing value chain. Also he added that, the department extended necessary help and support by providing finance to start-ups.
The project went operational in August 2009 and by now 18 hubs have been set up, Mabuyakhulu said.
