J&K handloom sector to be modernised

Jammu and Kashmir State Handloom Development Corporation's (SHDC) by close of July this year has attained net sales worth Rs. 13.1 million.

The Corporation has introduced modern looms each costing Rs. 50,000 with accessories, which it proposes to give out to the weavers for achieving better quality production in weaving.

S S Slathia, Chairman of SHDC, divulged the above facts at the recently held 57th meeting of Board of Directors of SHDC, chaired by the Minister for Industries and Commerce (I&C).

Members at the meet were informed that, the Corporation had expanded it retail sales channel and now it has even launched a new showroom at Delhi's Bikaji Cama Palace. SHDC is also deliberating to set up a new outlet in Handloom Haveli at Janpath in New Delhi.

Moreover, the Corporation has also worked out a plan to refurbish the heritage showroom at Government Handloom Silk Weaving Factory, Srinagar. SHDC has started refurbishing the existing retail area at Srinagar's silk weaving factory, with an estimated cost of five million rupees.

Slathia, while addressing the meet, stressed on the need to identify the core areas of the Corporation, where it has the potential to offer economical prices for supply to the Government departments.
