Honouring the innovation and excellence synonymous with the world famous Woolmark, Nikke - The Japan Wool Textile Co Ltd has been awarded the inaugural Special Woolmark Award 2010 at the Première Vision textile trade show in Paris.

Nikke won the award for the creativity and design displayed in their 100 per cent wool cavalry twill fabric displayed at last week's trade show.

A huge crowd gathered for the announcement of the winners of the PV Awards 2010 at a ceremony on the last day of the show.

The decision to award the prize to Nikke was made by a high level independent jury, itself rich in textile knowledge and ingenuity.

“Wool is magic, it carries traditional values and at the same time it offers new possibilities to experiment in the future. Wool is one fiber that every major designer needs, it is a central point in fashion creativity,” Jury President Ennio Capasa said.

Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) Europe general manager Nagy Bensid added the awards encouraged and promoted innovative thinking in the use of the natural and renewable fiber.

“This award is an excellent way for AWI to meet the enormous talent within the textile trade and to communicate the natural versatility of Merino wool. It helps us assess the adoption of our own R&D within the textile chain and to demonstrate how Merino wool is the fiber for all seasons and all occasions.”

In thanking the jury for their expertise, AWI presented each member with an ultrafine Jemala shawl. Made of 14 micron Merino wool and grown from the pastures of northern Victoria, the luxurious natural comfort of a Jemala shawl shows Merino wool at its best.

AWI, owner of the world famous Woolmark logo, is owned by 30,000 Australian woolgrowers. The Woolmark is the world's most recognised textile fiber mark.
