More and more farmers to the South of Anatolia are now adapting to cotton cultivation. This is because prices of the commodity usually referred to as “the white gold”, have almost grown two-fold over the last few years.

As against the per kg price of TL 1.77 in December 2008, the commodity was traded at a price of TL 3.6 per kg during August 2010.

According to experts, this trend of rise in the price of cotton is likely to continue in times to come, and are positive that the commodity prices may touch the TL 4.0 per kg mark by close of September.

Moreover, farmers in Adana's Çukurova, the cotton cultivation hub in Turkey, housing some of the world's finest cotton qualities, have now adapted to cultivating cotton in their farms, in which wheat or corn crops were harvested, a year back.

During the past one year's time, the area under cotton cultivation has grown by almost 50 percent, to 330 million square meters, from 220 million square meters in 2009.

Meanwhile, in Antalya, the area under cotton cultivation grew by more than two times, from last year's 22 million square meters to 55 million square meters.

Also, the total cotton production in country is likely to record a 35 percent year on year rise, by close of the new season.
