A demand, for help in setting up a completely developed airport and a cargo hub in Surat, Gujarat to attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) in large amounts, has been made by the Associated Chamber of Commerce (ASSOCHAM) to the Union Civil Aviation Minister and Gujarat Chief Minister Mr. Narendra Modi.

Surat, which is considered as the textile hub of India for manufacturing world-class synthetic fabrics, can also become a centre for various sectors such as embroidery, chemical industries, engineering, logistics and petrochemicals.

Textile sector is the second most crucial industry of Surat, after the diamond processing export oriented industry and has huge potential to attract large investments. The textile industry employs around 700,000 people and accounts for 18 percent of overall export of man-made fibres and 40 percent of the production of man-made fabric in India.

Apart from textiles; energy, oil and petroleum are the other sectors through which the whole district of Surat has been successful in attracting huge FDI into the country.
