No power subsidy for drought-hit jute farmers

The West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL) has rejected a proposal for granting power subsidy to the jute cultivators from 11 districts of the State, particularly, those severely affected by drought.

The state is meeting the drought head-on, which is considered to be the severest of all droughts that the state has faced in recent years. There has been a 33 percent shortfall in the rains this year, considering which the Centre has already passed Rs. 10.23 billion for the State to fight the adversities.

Droughts have also significantly affected the jute production in these districts. As jute is an intercrop, it is cultivated during the months of July to September, and thus the crop production has greatly suffered, almost slashed, due to drought.

Industry circles see raw jute production for this season coming down by 15-20 percent, on account of scanty rains.

Members of the Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) and the Jute Corporation of India (JCI) recently paid a visit to Nadia and Murshidabad, two of the biggest jute producing districts in the State, and noticed that there has been a great fall in crop sowing tendency.
