The State Government of Tamil Nadu has been appealed by the South India Cotton Association (SICA) to take steps to improve cotton output of the state. The yearly cotton production of the state is stagnating at just 500,000 bales said SICA.

SICA had suggested the State Cotton Council to increase the cotton production up to 1.5 million bales. Godowns have been set up in Coimbatore and Rajapalayam by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) in a bid to provide cotton to state's textile mills.

Around 50 percent of corporation's procurement should be stocked in these godowns as the state has half of the country's spindle capacity, demanded SICA. These mills in the state usually procure cotton through local agents and brokers.

Cotton production of the state of Karnataka is currently 1.2 million bales and it has targeted to produce 3.5 million bales. A sub-committee to escalate state's cotton production should be formed by the Tamil Nadu state government as textile mills in the state consume largest volume of cotton, SICA added.
