Paraguay imports cotton seeds from Brazil

Cotton producers have invested over $500,000 for importing around 25,000 bags of cotton seeds from Brazil. This step has been taken to ease the supply of cotton to textile manufacturing in the country.

Accepting the directives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), the National Quality and Plant Health and Seeds (SENAVE) has particularly approved the import of some undefined traditional varieties of cotton seeds which have not been registered in the country.

This exemption for the import of seeds was condemned by a section of the industry as these seeds are still unknown and unacknowledged. This step, they said, could allow the profusion of low or even debatable quality of textile material in the country.

In 2009-10, the total cotton crop production stood at 15,124 tons from 13,000 hectares. A fall of 95% has been registered in comparison with the production of 2004 which then was 316,000 tons. The highest yield so far had been 753,000 tons of cotton.
