To increase the cotton production of the country by three times, Tanzania will start producing genetically-modified cotton and will facilitate farmers with credit on inputs.

The legal framework has been set up to cultivate the genetically-modified cotton strain or BT cotton. Trials on this framework would be commenced soon.

Improved productivity, credit extension for farmers and introduction of contract farming would result in swelling lint cotton production to around 260,000 tons by fiscal 2014-15 from this season's estimated output of 90,000 tons.

As farmers will be offered inputs on credits, cotton output will show improvement, revealed a pilot study. Extension services would be offered to the farmers, co-operatively by the private sector and the government.

Following Egypt, Tanzania stands fifth among the largest cotton producers of Africa.
