In the year 2009-10, raw silk imports of India from China tumbled down by around 12.5 percent following the anti-dumping duty levied by the Indian government on the import of silk products from China.

During the aforesaid period, country's overall import of raw silk was 7,341 tons against 8,392 tons of raw silk in the previous fiscal. Country's overall annual requirement for raw silk is around 28,000 tons, while it is producing just 19,500 tons of raw silk, at present.

Around 98.7 percent, i.e. 7,098 tons of total raw silk were sourced from China, in fiscal 2009-10, while in the year 2008-09, these imports stood at 8,316 tons.

Import of silk material from Brazil improved over two-fold to 69 tons from 31 tons in the year 2009-10. Similarly, these imports from Uzbekistan augmented considerably to 82 tons from last year's import of 18 tons. Iran and Korea exported around 29 and 16 tons of raw silk, respectively, to India in the fiscal.

Following the imposition of anti-dumping duty by the government for five years from 2003 to 2008, Chinese imports have been gradually falling down since past seven years. Indian Government has imposed this duty with an objective to salvage the local sericulture farmers and weavers.
