Pakistan, if it grants official permission to cultivate BT Cotton, would not be required to import cotton from other countries, and is seen to save Rs. 90 billion, each year.

Cotton cultivation has almost doubled for the lands where BT Cotton has been sown.

Last year, though Pakistan Government permitted use of this BT Cotton, but as this was only a temporary move without any formal backing, hence was revoked.

Experts fear that, if the current state of affairs keeps on, it would negatively impact county's cotton production, and that the country may have to import over three million bales of cotton.

Nonetheless, if the government officially permits use of BT Cotton for cultivation, this would not only help the country to attain self-reliance for cotton, but would also save Rs. 90-95 billion annually.
