It was observed at the national Alpaca Expo held at the Christchurch that, the quality of the fibre of the New Zealand alpacas, is getting better year and year.
Each year the 12,000 to 15,000 alpacas in the country produce around 20,000 to 30,000 kg of fibre, a small volume of which is even exported.
The South American animal's fibre is preferred for apparel due to its qualities like softness and fineness.
Around 300 breeders from across the country showed their willingness to partake in the event, while the event even drew a record 160 fake entries.
Sources revealed that, during the auction sale of breeding animals, a few of the alpacas were even sold for prices beyond $20,000.
Further, these alpacas from New Zealand even made it to the latest European shows, and won the national championship.
