US demands give 33% fillip to handicraft exports

Demand rise in US has given a 33 percent boost to handicraft exports of India which rose to $62.48 million (around Rs 2.75 billion) in the month of September. The exports in September 2009 stood at $46.87 million (around Rs 2.05 billion).

The Indian handicraft sector is expected to attain the export target of $2.2 billion, this fiscal. Handicraft exports have also witnessed an enhancement on account of the incentives extended by the government, during the Foreign Trade Policy (2009-14) review.

In the fiscal 2008-09, handicraft exports stood at $1.83 billion. It comprised of metal-wares, wood wares, imitation jewelry and zari products. During the initial six months of the fiscal 2010-11, handicraft exports escalated by around 22 percent to $1.02 billion.

About 70 percent of Indian handicrafts is exported collectively to the US and EU. Moradabad, Jaipur, Saharanpur and Jodhpur are the key handicraft centers of India which provide handicraft items to the foreign countries. Around 1 million people are engaged in this sector.
