Italy supports Pakistani concessions subject to conditions

Franco Frattini, Italian Foreign Minister recently warned that Italy's backing to Pakistan for special trade favours is purely based on the condition that, other Asian countries are not granted any such concessions.

Italy, an EU country is supporting the British proposal of granting duty-free access to Pakistani textile items in European markets, but then Rome is apprehending that granting Pakistan such free access to world's largest trading bloc, may lead to a loss of around 40,000 jobs in leading EU textile producers.

Though the European Commission has shown its readiness to bestow 75 different product lines from Pakistan with duty free access, but this can take form of a contract only when all other countries in the region give their consent in the World Trade Organization. However, Italy is fretful that India may raise its claim and demand equal treatment.

The Minister stated that, subject to some conditions, Italy may grant its sanction to this deal in order to overcome hurdles.

He further stated that, Italy is of the opinion that such access can be granted, but only after considering the list of the items and subject to an assurance that no such benefits will be granted to other countries in the region, barring Pakistan.
