Govt plans to set up 1,000 handicrafts villages

According to Douglas Devananda – the Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister, the government has decided to establish 1,000 traditional handicrafts villages throughout the country within a period of one year.

He added that, traditional handicrafts villages are going to be established under the Mahinda Chintana - Vision for the Future program.

The Sri Lanka Industrial Development Board, which operates under the Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Ministry, undertakes the selection of villages which have traditional craftsmen. They gain the technical knowledge, new designs and patterns from the co-operative societies.

The minister informed that, the government has allotted Rs 2.9 million for setting up the Webadamulla village and Rs 3 million for the Radawadunna village.

The minister also spoke about the challenges faced by the craftsmen and assured them to provide machinery for the cane factory and the requisite amount of clay for the Webadamulla factory.

The Minister has also directed the Divisional Secretary and Regional Director of the Industrial Development Board to present its report, specifying the necessities of the two villages.
