Textile exports surge in Q1 of fiscal 2010-11

The data recently released by Pakistan's Federal Bureau of Statistics indicates that, textile product exports rose by 20.7 percent during the initial three months of current fiscal year to stand at $2.917 billion as against $2.417 billion during corresponding period of last fiscal.

This rise in exports is mainly due to, rising international demand coupled with a rise in the per unit price of country's textile items. Though, exports have grown in terms of value, but while assessed in terms of volume, a drop is seen almost all textile product lines.

As revealed by the statistics, raw cotton exports during the July to September period fell from last year's $40.458 million to $7.202 million, down 82.2 percent, year on year. As against this, cotton yarn exports surged from last year's $346.402 million to $353.617 million this year, up 2.08 percent.

Also, for the period under consideration, while cotton fabric exports recorded a rise of 22.88 percent, knitwear and bedwear exports too grew by 15.79 percent 14.73 percent, respectively.

While cotton fabric exports surged from $432.974 million to $532.0.35 million, exports of carded or combed cotton fell from $5.37 million to $141,000.

Exports of knitwear items too rose from $471.747 million to $546.247 million, and that of bedwear items from $420.532 million to $482.461 million.

Further, while tents, canvas and tarpaulin exports witnessed a 38.67 percent fall, towel exports surged by 12.12 percent.

Also, while there was a rise of 38.83 percent in readymade apparel exports for period under consideration, and made-ups and other textile articles too registered a growth of 26.72 percent and 84.27 percent, respectively.
