Pakistan has earned the distinction of being world's first-ever Qualified Better Cotton (BC) country. WWF and Pakistan have become leaders in BC production.

Pakistan had started the cotton project almost a decade ago in three villages of Vehari district to make the cotton growers aware about the use of less agro-chemicals and irrigation water. Over a period of several years, it was felt that the project could be made workable if both domestic textile manufacturers and global brands become part of it.

In December 2005, the project management team tried convincing the IKEA authority in Helsingborg, Sweden to provide assistance in its field work and include the domestic suppliers. This was followed by a series of conferences with APTMA, PCGA and FAP among others.

In 2010, they worked along with 40,000 cotton growers covering an area of over 160,000 ha. The entire team worked relentlessly to make this project a success. The outcome of this effort has been really impressing as about 45,000 MT of the cotton from the project has been certified as 'Better Cotton' under the assessment and verification process of Better Cotton Initiative (BCI).

The domestic ginners and spinners are likely to use BC for global customers. The work is still in its initial phase and it is expected that people associated with this project will continue to work hard in the future also.
