GI registration of kinnauri shawls to benefit its weavers

1 min read

More than 1,000 weavers involved in creating Kinnauri shawls are expected to benefit from the prestigious Geographical Indications (GI) tag offered to this product. This registration will control unauthorised production of these shawls and prevent the misuse of its brand name.

Only the weavers registered with the Kinnaur Handloom Weavers Association will have the right to use this brand name to sell their shawls. Registration of products under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999, gives benefit to the artisans, producers and other stakeholders who produce a product identified with a particular area.

Apart from offering authenticity to the products, GI registration is likely to facilitate weavers to market their products, and is expected to eventually boost the sale of these specially designed shawls. Tribal people dwelling in Kinnaur produce these shawls, on traditional looms, with intricate borders in bright colours.
