Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) reported the key markets of textile and apparel for Korea.
It stated that major retailers in Korea anticipate increased sales this winter on the back of strong demand for casual and sports wear from young consumers.
Aggregate apparel sales, however, during October were relatively flat, affected by the warm and rainy autumn.
Women's casual wear - blazers, knitted coats - enjoyed positive consumer demand during October, although suits and formal wear remained fairly sluggish for the period.
Woollen products noted a revival as coats and outerwear merchandise increased presence in the casual wear market. Also, good sales of cashmere sweaters were recorded in the middle priced market.
Raw wool imports in the nine months ending September improved gradually, although the speed of growth is slowing. Wool top imports from China continued to grow sharply, while Australian wool top imports dropped significantly.
Reflecting the improvement in retail demand, domestic wool availability at retail recovered strongly during the second quarter of 2005, more than making up for a similar rate of decline last year.
Domestic wool textile production was fairly lacklustre in October reflecting slow progress in order levels for the Spring/Summer 2006 season, coupled with diminished additional orders for the current Autumn/Winter season.
AWI initiates, commissions and delivers research and development (R&D) to Australian woolgrowers. They work through alliances and contracts and, where possible, we commercialise R&D outcomes. The primary aim is the adoption of technology - on farm and along the global wool pipeline.
