A Centre of Excellence for sportswear (technical textiles) has been proposed, to set up, by the Textiles Committee, which is an organization of the Union Ministry of Textiles. In this regard, a proposal appealing to declare it as a centre of excellence for sportswear would be submitted to the Ministry, said Mr. B. Balamurugan while addressing the press in Coimbatore.

Mumbai would be the preferred location to establish this centre as the committee already has several facilities in the city. Quality assurance, export promotion and testing are the areas where the committee has set its focus.

During past two years, it has made investments of around Rs 200 million to upgrade its laboratories. It has 30 offices and 430 officials who are technical experts. It has proposed to start a skill development program for technicians in the textile sector and has already put forward a proposal to the government regarding this.

Mr. B. Balamurugan further informed that the committee wants to focus on the development of textile sector and wishes to act as a facilitator. It is executing many programs of Union Government like the handloom mark and tying with global agencies. It aims at widening its services to new exporters.

Last year, the committee had given star rating to 170 ginning and processing units, whereas during the current year it has approached around 108 units till now. Due to these star ratings, units could bring down their costs. Most of these units are situated in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
