In the fasting organized by all Textile Associations of Tirupur under the Chairmanship of Mr A.Sakthivel, President, Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) more than one lakh people, Entrepreneurs, Trade Unions and workers participated in the fasting held today (19.11.2010) between 9.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. in Tirupur.
Similar protests were organised in other textiles centres across the country. The fast was organised to protest against the hike in the prices of cotton yarn which is making textile exports uncompetitive resulting in closure of units adding to unemployment and social unrest. The striking union demanded immediate ban on cotton yarn exports which is prime reason for escalation in prices.
The other demand include freezing of raw cotton exports at 55 lakh bales. The union demanded that government should encourage value added exports of apparels and made ups rather than export of raw cotton and yarn whose exports is adding to competitiveness of our competitors in these segment. Value added exports add to about 5 times per unit realistion besides spin off effect on economy said Mr Sakthivel, President, TEA.
