Manufacturing of Khadi clothes is completely a green activity without leaving any carbon footprint. It is woven on handloom from cotton, silk or woolen hand spun yarn and nowhere in the process, is power used.

However, KVIC through Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Industrialization (MGIRI) has taken steps to harness solar energy for running charkhas in order to reduce the drudgery in spinning activity and make the quality of yarn more uniform.

The field trial of solar charkha is taking place in six Khadi clusters under the Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI). These Clusters are located in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Gujarat.

This information was given by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Shri Dinsha Patel in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
