Goan handicraft body explores domestic & global markets

In order to get recognition for the products of local craftsmen and to boost their income for the current financial year, the Goa Handicrafts Corporation is exploring foreign markets like Greece and US.
Sameer Salgaonkar, Chairman of the Goa Handicrafts Rural Small Scale Industries Development Corporation (GHRSSIDC), said that India each year exports Rs 100 million worth of handicrafts and if they succeed to attain even 10 percent of this, it would be of great help to the craftsmen. They had visited Greece and Los Angeles in US in search of newer markets where they can export their products.
He, further, revealed that they have already started exporting their products to Switzerland and would soon pay a visit to Munich in Germany so as to find a market for their goods there.
During 2009-10, GHRSSIDC generated revenues worth some Rs 310 million through the sale of coal, steel and handicrafts, and is looking forward to further raise the figure this fiscal year.
The official said that they have decided to consider various tourist locations in the country for promoting the handicrafts. He added that they are also planning to organize an expo 'Aparant Maand' on the Mandrem beach in North Goa.
Further, a craft bazaar would also be held on the Baga beach between 22nd and 31st December and that various small expositions would also be held across the country with metros being the main target.
In order to boost its revenues, GHRSSIDC intends to get in touch with the Economic Development Corporation to discuss the prospects of using a plot at Verna Industrial Estate and leasing out the same to a private company.
