In a bid to satisfy the requirements of the domestic spinning and textile units, Egypt is considering to permit imports of short-staple cotton in the country.
Owing to its relative geographical seclusion, the country with its incessant efforts for years together has been able to develop various grades of superior long-staple cotton, which are totally free from contamination by cross-breeding with inferior quality grades.
However, in order to help the domestic textile units to cope with the rise in cotton prices, the Trade Ministry has given its consent to the Agriculture Ministry's proposal of allowing imports of short-staple cotton.
