Cotton output declines substantially

There has been a fall of 16.95 percent in Pakistan's cotton production, which is evident from the fact that this year by December 15 only 93,77,263 cotton bales have reached the ginneries, as against 1,12,91,149 bales that reached the ginneries during the corresponding period, last year.

Masood A Majeed, Chairman of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA), stated that there are 945 ginning units functional in Punjab and Sindh provinces and that 10,20,038 cotton bales have reached these ginneries during the two weeks period from December 1st to 15, 2010.

Cotton crops in various regions like Layyah, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur and Dera Ghazi Khan have suffered considerable damage due to the recent floods, he said. Muzaffargarh lost 44.54 percent of its cotton crop, Rajanpur lost 58.75 percent; Dera Ghazi Khan lost 19.09 percent, while Jhang, Hyderabad and Ghotki lost 18.86, 22.17 and 25.12 percent of their crops respectively, he added.
