Textile sector stakeholders urged to unite for sustainable future

In order to ensure a sustainable future for the industry and for ensuring proper adherence of all the labour laws, it is necessary that all stakeholders of the textile industry should come together.

A Garment Support Group has been constituted with an aim to actively associate with all the stakeholders of textile industry including the worker's unions, labourers, mill owners and governmental as well as non-governmental agencies functioning in the sector.

The textile hubs need to bring down their attrition rate in order to retain the competitive gains in the global market.

Textile sector, with its contribution to the industrial production, export revenues and generation of employment opportunities, holds a significant position in the industrial realm of Karnataka. The sector is the second largest employment generating sector of the state, next to agriculture.

The state contributes 20 percent of the total garment production of the country valuing Rs 75 billion, which is equivalent to eight percent of the country's overall exports. Likewise, the textile sector accounts for 0.5 percent of the state's GDP which totals to around Rs 1000 billion.

Furthermore, as newer opportunities are emerging in the city of Bangalore at a higher pace, the garment units there are confronting higher attrition rate. Now, it is necessary for all the stakeholders in the industry to join hands to preserve the endowment so as to ensure sustainability of the industry.

The group is carrying out discussions with all the union leaders and trying to find a solution to all the labour issues of the textile industry.
