The Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (SACTWU) recently stated that low-cost illegal imports of clothing and textile goods is damaging the country's clothing and textile sector.
The losses that the industry has been suffering are largely due to illegal imports of fake goods, SACTWU said. It also added that as the Department of Trade and Industry recently conducted several raids in the Cape Peninsula, it seized around R5 million worth of fake textile goods.
It is not possible for the domestic factories to contest the sales of these fake items, SACTWU said.
It further said that for each fake garment that is imported there stands a cent percent chance of someone losing a job in Cape Town or in South Africa.
