According to a government report, the Egyptian cotton production in 2008-09 registered a fall of 11.4 percent as against the cotton production in 2007-08.

The report revealed that during the cotton growing season of 2008-09, cotton production declined to 1.79 million quintals from 2.02 million quintals in 2007-08.

As per the report, there had been a decline of 9.3 percent in the area under cotton cultivation. Cotton plantation area reduced to 284,000 feddans (1 feddan = 1.038 acres) in 2008-09 from 313,000 feddans in 2007-08.

An association of textile workers which met in Cairo towards the beginning of this month, demanded for the creation of funds to support cotton production in the country, with the intention of motivating farmers to grow cotton and channelizing investment towards the textile firms which require machinery upgradation.

Analysts are of the opinion that the country's cotton textiles are persistently declining owing to the poor financial assistance from government for cotton, which is of best quality in the entire world.
