Informing about the 'Cotton Calibration Standards', which is an import substitute product, useful for calibration of HVI and traceable to USDA standards, he said, “Calibration is a mechanism by which we make the instruments ready for testing cotton. Before testing any cotton, we need to calibrate the instruments to give accurate value, by means of calibrated cotton.

“Since cotton is not a standard material and has lots of variations in properties, it is necessary to calibrate the instruments with standard cotton. We provide the calibrated cotton with the standards to textile mills and before beginning testing it is necessary to check the standards with testing equipments and if there are any deviations, the testing instruments needs to be mechanically set right, by an engineer.

“In the world, only the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is authorized to supply calibrated cotton. But in 1997, they decided not to supply a particular variety of calibrated cotton, so CIRCOT rose to the occasion and decided to do R&D and supply calibrated cotton to the Indian textile industry. The standards of CIRCOT are traceable to the USDA standards and give the same values, within an acceptable error”, he concluded by saying.

When asked about the awareness levels on using CIRCOT calibrated cotton amongst Indian textile mills, he informed that, we have not conducted any awareness programs in the last five years, but before that we had conducted awareness programs in all the major textile hubs across the country and since CIRCOT is receiving repeat orders from the same spinners a few new ones have been added, we are assuming that awareness is good.

Espousing the need among spinners to use CIRCOT calibrated cotton, he said, “Since we are import substitute, we are much cheaper; the quality is equivalent to USDA standards, no hassles of importing. CIRCOT also provides all qualities and classes of calibrated cotton and only a simple call or mail to CIRCOT is enough and deliveries are made in time”, he wrapped up by saying.

He also commended fibre2fashion for successfully organizing this conference and bringing together entrepreneurs from various other sectors, other than the cotton value-added industry, who could also benefit from most of the cotton technologies.
