On 7 December, Outdoor Retailer held its first Virtual Design Center LIVE (VDC), a one-day interactive virtual seminar. In 2011 Outdoor Retailer, a Nielsen Business Media event, will bring well-known retailers in the outdoor sports sector (apparel, tools and equipment, footwear, accessories) to Salt Lake City, Utah, for its two events, the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market (20-23 January 2011) and the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market (4-7 August 2011). Among the exhibitors will be prestigious brands such as Timberland, Patagonia, The North Face, Goretex, Woolrich, Merrell and many others.

American Apparel Producers' Network (AAPN) was one of the content providers and sponsors of the interactive Virtual Design Center LIVE conference, attended by RadiciGroup and others in the sector. This first VDC LIVE focused on the pressing issue of sustainability, with the theme “Sustainability through Design”.

"The decision by Nielsen to introduce the Virtual Design Center concept is truly visionary," said Mike Todaro, managing director of the American Apparel Producers' Network, in the event press release. The VDC gave the opportunity to two key industry players — “designers with ideas and suppliers with experience” — to meet and exchange ideas on the important topic of sustainability.

The VDC featured a virtual auditorium hosting numerous panel discussions and virtual exhibit halls with product displays. Thus, the attendees were able not only to participate in real-time discussions but also to exhibit their products and services at an interactive event that can truly be called a “virtual trade show”.

One of the presenters who took part in the Virtual Design Center LIVE was Kim Hall, marketing manager of RadiciSpandex Corporation, an American RadiciGroup company engaged in the manufacture and sale of Radelast elastane fibre.

Ms. Hall had some very positive comments on the event: “This virtual meeting was greatly anticipated,” said Kim Hall, marketing manager of RadiciSpandex, “and I must say that it was a real success. It was an innovative and eco-sustainable way of participating in an event that was not only a conference but a trade show, since there were online booths for product and brand promotion.

“We were able to conduct simultaneous chat sessions during the day, which allowed for active exchange of information. Many of the questions voiced were related to how our business was doing and our forecast for the first quarter 2011. We also had discussions on the worldwide economic situation, the supply and demand for cotton, the use of nanotechnology in textiles.

“I anticipate additional inquiries over the next three months, during which our product information and sustainability vision will remain accessible on the website and Facebook profile of Outdoor Retailer. In particular I anticipate additional inquiries concerning sustainability and how companies could make an effective contribution to safeguarding the environment and its resources through responsible and sustainable behaviour.”
