He has diversified in to wool and linen handloom products which is the first ever in the Barabanki cluster. They have also been helped in design development by EDI. Today he lives in a big house instead of the thatched hut he used to stay in 2006.

Next we spoke to Mohammed Ansari from Chanderi Cluster in Madhya Pradesh. Chanderi cluster provided the stoles won by the winners at the recently held Commonwealth games. He makes sarees, dupattas, dress materials, table covers. They are helped in their designs by a Delhi based designer; Sanjay Garg. Previously they used to produce pure silk materials, but now have shifted to blend of cotton in warp and silk in weft, due to the fact that it now hotter for most of the months in India.

Speaking about the gains he derived, since the idea of clusters was initiated, he said, “We have got exposure to different markets in India because of these type of expos, which also eliminated middle-men who were eating up most of the profits. I was also a weaver at one time, but after the formation of the clusters our incomes have gone up. Today I am my own master like the 750 other weavers in our cluster. Our incomes have doubled in the last few years, other than which we will get yearly dividends from our cluster”.
