Asian rising alpaca yarn demand boosts Peruvian exports

Driven by the increase in demand from the Asian markets, the exports of alpaca yarn – carded or combed are believed to have grown by around 40.1 percent during 2010 to $36.5 million.

The alpaca yarn – carded and combed exports for the initial 11 months of 2010 came to $34.8 million, which was 49 percent higher than the exports registered during the corresponding period in the previous year.

Taiwan, with a rise of 190.8 percent in its imports emerged to be the biggest importer of alpacas from Peru last year. Meanwhile a rise was also noticed in imports by other countries like China which constituted 63.1 percent of country's total exports, while UK accounted for 53.5 percent, Japan 11.6 percent and Italy 27.2 percent.

Italy, in 2009 lost its position of being a leading importer of alpaca's from Peru, to China which constituted 63.1 percent of Peru's total exports during the January to November period last year, whereas Italy accounted for 27.2 percent.

Michell & Cía with 52.2 percent, Clasificadora de Lanas Macedo with 2.6 percent, Productos del Sur with 39.1 percent and Inca Tops with 5.4 percent share, stood out to be the leading alpaca exporting firms during 2010.
