According to the Association of Petrochemicals Producers in Europe, ethylene production in West Europe rose by 8.1 percent in 2010, with the overall production touching 20.281 million metric ton (mt). Likewise, production of propylene also witnessed similar surge.

Ethylene production in the fourth quarter of 2010 had been 4.971 million mt, registering a decline of 3.7 percent from the third quarter's output of 5.161 million mt.

Output of propylene showed an increase of 5.6 percent from 2009 to reach 15.028 million mt, last year. In 2010, propylene production in the fourth quarter stood at 3.642 million mt, witnessing a drop of 5.2 percent from the third quarter's output of 3.843 million mt.

Following the global economic slump, the European petrochemical asset base has undergone some rationalization. The companies which had become almost obsolete and could not compete any more were abandoned. This permitted the rest of the manufacturers to operate at higher efficiency rates.

Downstream demand has registered a surge in 2010 owing to the stock refilling after the enormous destocking drive carried out in 2008. Apart from this, there has been a delay in the initiation of the petrochemical projects in Middle East so whatever requirement was generated, it could be fulfilled with the domestic production from Europe.
