Vietcraft focuses on design improvement & market expansion
Feb '11
Viet Nam Handicraft Exporters Association (Vietcraft) is likely to establish a design centre to make handicraft products. Inferior designs are impeding the growth of the industry. As per the survey of the association, over 80 percent of Vietnam's handicraft producers are not in a position to make their own designs and therefore, are engaged in outwork for overseas firms.

A major factor in enabling the handicraft sector to develop and compete with the handicraft products from Thailand and Phillippines is the standard of the designs. Since, the handicraft producers from Vietnam mostly depend upon overseas firms, therefore, they earn modest profits.

Vietcraft also suggested the local handicraft producers to extend co-operation with their overseas counterparts so that they are able to develop designs that fulfil the demand of their clients. Apart from concentrating on designs, the association also anticipates that its members should expand their export markets by means of holding fairs and exhibitions which are exclusively dedicated to handicraft products.

According to the association, in spite of the fact that handicraft industry earns over US$1 billion for the country every year, there has been no such fair or exhibition till date which is exclusively dedicated to the handicraft items. The average annual growth rate for the country's handicraft sector has been 11-15 percent since the last decade. The sector's exports had crossed over $1.5 billion in 2010 in comparison with $200 million in 2000.
