The textile exporters in Pakistan have raised apprehensions regarding the fall in textile items exports to Tunisia and Egypt, on account of the political instability and chaos going on in these countries.
Advisor to the PM on textiles, Ikhtiar Baig while responding to these apprehensions said that, Pakistan's textile industry is already hit by Turkey's proposal of imposing anti-dumping duty on fabrics and garment imports from Pakistan, and if this proposed duty is imposed it would cause Pakistan's textile industry to suffer a loss of around $400 million.
He revealed that, the US has entered into a FTA pact with Morocco and Egypt, which allows duty free exports of textile products from these countries to the US, and that, the fabrics from Pakistan are eligible to such duty free exports to the US via Egypt and Morocco.
But then, the official stated that, it was a transitory phase, and as soon as the political situation resumes back to stability in Egypt and Tunisia, Pakistan would resume its exports through these countries.
Also, while speaking on the Turkey's move, he said that, the Pakistani government is trying to persuade the Turkish authorities to keep Pakistan out of the list of the countries on which it proposes to impose anti-dumping duty. A delegation headed by the TDAP CEO which is already in Ankara is to soon take up the matter with the Turkish authorities.
