Awareness seminar on handloom exports held in Ahmedabad

Handloom exports have taken a pride place among the products export basket from India. It was appropriate of Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC) to hold a half day seminar on its export awareness at Ahmedabad, yesterday.

Inaugurating the seminar Mr A M Solanki, IAS, Secretary (Industries, Mines & Power Department, Govt. of Gujarat) lauded the HEPC to mobilize members from Gujarat citing huge opportunities for handloom exporters of the state to take advantage of Central Government Schemes and Programmes.

Gujarat, he said, was the land of Patolas, Bandhnis, Asavalli Shawls and stoles having tremendous export potential. He added that Government would do all to encourage the sector by sanctioning Handloom Park if proposals to that effect come up.

He stated that Mr Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat, was personally interested in the development and welfare of artisans, promotion of their products and skills. He cajoled entrepreneurs, exporters and businesses from the State to take advantage of such programmes conducted by the Central as well as the State Government.

Speaking about the handicrafts and handloom actitivites, Mr A K Jha, IFS, Managing Director emphasized on the requirement to establish a data base of handloom weavers in specific and all connected with this significant sector that would help in dissemination of information and schemes of the Central as well as the State Government.

Welcoming the participants, Mr N O Solanki, Deputy Director and OIC Weavers Services Centre, Ahmedabad said that Government schemes for export promotion and market development should be adopted by Gujarat's handloom exporters.

In his valedictory address, Mr V Thulasidharan, Consultant, HEPC briefed the participants about the role and activities of HEPC whose membership has reached more than 1750. He enumerated the several export promotion programmes and schemes run by their organization and sought support of local Government and State Government bodies to encourage handloom exports.

The Technical Sessions comprised of topics like e Marketing Strategies by industry experts like Mr Jagat Shah of M/s Global Enterprises, Ahmedabad; Technology Intervention in Cluster Development by Mr B B Paul, Director, Weavers Service Centre, Chennai; Handloom Mark and its significance by Mr B R Rane, Deputy Director; rounded off by a presentation by Mrs Geeta Baitmangalkar, Senior Manager, Export Credit and Guarantee Corporation of India Ltd , Ahmedabad.

Exporters, cooperative organization representatives and others from Gujarat who attended this seminar went back carrying essential information related to developing handloom exports through internet, government schemes, sectoral technology, and credit guarantee and insurance schemes.
