2010 - A positive year for Japan's textile exports

Japan's textile and apparel exports, registering a year on year rise of 16 percent have grown to US $8,612.69 million during 2010, as compared to a year earlier. However, owing to the rise in the annual yen-dollar exchange rate which went up by 10.7 percent to 83.41 yen during 2010 from 93.40 yen in 2009 as against the greenback, and the yen-based export value registered a rise of only nine percent to 753.8 billion yen during the period.

A rise in exports of all key products was witnessed during the period, whereby the textile fibre exports rose by 29 percent to $1,319.12 million, while that of yarn registered a rise of 38 percent at $1,053.85 million. Also, the woven fabric exports too grew by five percent to $2,657.02 million.

A market wise segregation reveals that the country's exports to East Asia rose by 16 percent, representing a 74 percent of the overall dollar value, while that to China increased by 13 percent accounting for a 39 percent share. Also, exports to Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand too increased by 39, 14 and 38 percent respectively, while those to Europe and North America increased by 30 and 23 percent respectively. But then, a fall of 12 percent was noted in exports to West Asia.
