China totally imported 392,000 tons of cotton in January, 70,000 tons less than in December or down 15.2 percent, but still up 29.9 percent, from a year ago.
Average import price continued to rise to US $2,833 / ton, up $ 177 or 6.7 percent compared with December.
India continued to be largest source with its proportion accounting for 50.7 percent of all January cotton imports. United States took second place and Uzbekistan was the third.
China imported 198,000 tons of cotton from India in January, decline of 16.4 percent from the previous month. Imports from the US fetched 152,000 tons, an increase of 19.9 percent from December 2010 and accounted for 38.8 percent of total cotton imports.
Cotton imports from Uzbekistan registered 17,000 tons, down 60.5 percent from the previous month, for a marginal share of 4.3 percent.
Average cotton price of all countries continued to rise. Among the three largest source countries, average price of Uzbek cotton reached $3,214 / ton, up 4.7 percent from the previous month.
The average import price of Indian cotton marked $2,860 / ton, up 4.3 percent and average price of US cotton was $2,754 / ton, up 14.5 percent.
