The suspension of natural gas supply by the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) for five days in a week has caused the textile sector of Punjab to suffer heavy financial losses.

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) will approach the Lahore High Court (LHC) with a plea for relief against such irrational move of SNGPL.

The SNGPL's move of suspending gas supply to the industries in Punjab for so many days in a week is being severely condemned by the APTMA and other export-oriented production industries.

According to APTMA, such a move is very much detrimental for the textile sector and also for country's overall trade, which is already being severely hit by the adverse trade climate in the country.

APTMA said that, such an absurd decision will prove to be a final stroke on the textile industry, which is the biggest export industry of the country.

Such a decision would compel the industries, particularly those in Punjab to close down, and would thus badly hit the sector, which is a source of livelihood for over 500,000 workers, it added.

The Economic Coordination Council (ECC), in view of the demand-supply situation in the country had decided on only two days of gas outages in a week for the textile industry, but the SNGPL has completely contravened this direction of the top level committee, and put at risk the entire manufacturing industry of Punjab, APTMA added.
