“Priority will be given to cotton-based industries in Vidarbha”, said Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
“Farmers in the region will also be encouraged to involve themselves in other businesses like milk production, to bring about sustained development in the cotton belt”, he added.
When asked as to why textile mills in the region had closed down, he replied, “There was a lack of sincerity and effort amongst the promoters”.
Vidarbha is considered the cotton bowl of India. However the cotton crop in this season was damaged due to unseasonal rains and in previous years, output was affected by measly-bug virus.
