WACKER presents Novel Binder for permanent FR textiles

The Munich-based WACKER Group has developed a novel dispersion tailored to textiles with stringent flame-retardancy requirements. This new self-crosslinking copolymer dispersion is based on vinyl chloride and ethylene with a reduced formaldehyde content.

It features high heat resistance, excellent adhesion to textile fibers, and a wide range of processing options, including spray-application and impregnation. This makes the new VINNOL CEN 2752 ideally suited for the manufacture of flame-retardant fabrics and nonwovens.

The new VINNOL CEN 2752 is an aqueous copolymer dispersion made from vinyl chloride and ethylene. It is an excellent binder for coating modern textiles and nonwovens.

The high proportion of vinyl chloride in the base polymer makes it especially suitable for flame-retardant finishing of textiles such as upholstery fabrics and sun-protection articles, e.g. sunshades and blinds, used in the domestic and commercial sectors. It has excellent stability in combination with flame-retarding additives such as inorganic and organic phosphates or aluminum hydroxide. VINNOL CEN 2752 also allows a significant reduction in the amount of flame-retarding additives required for a permanently flame-retardant finish on textiles.

The new dispersion adheres reliably and permanently to cellulose as well as to synthetic fibers and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coatings.

Furthermore, it has a high wet strength, a stable viscosity, and good wash resistance. Nonwovens and textiles coated with VINNOL CEN 2752 have a high chemical resistance and can be heat sealed or high-frequency welded. The dispersion is simple and versatile to use and can be applied by spraying, impregnation, and foaming, etc. It can also be used for adhesive bonding of PVC to cardboard, paper, and fiber materials.

As further advantages, VINNOL CEN 2752 is plasticizer-free and has a lower formaldehyde content than conventional self-crosslinking vinyl chloride copolymer dispersions. The dispersion complies with the latest product safety requirements. VINNOL CEN 2752 is thus ideally suited as a binder for soft nonwovens and as a coating for woven and knitted fabrics, particularly for modern flame-retardant textiles. Typical applications include coating of upholstery, floor coverings such as PVC and needled felt or for heat-sealable wadding materials.
