The 6th Annual ETP Conference was held with great success on 31 March & 1 April in Brussels. Some 140 participants from industry, research, European Commission and the press attended the event.

The main focus was the presentation of the position of the Textile and Clothing sector towards the emerging EU Research and Innovation policy. The key concepts underlying the EU's Innovation Union policy which will set the scene for the EU strategy and funding programmes for Research and Innovation during the 2013 to 2020 timeframe were presented by Mr. Tonnie De Koster, Head of the Innovation Policy unit at DG Research and Innovation of the European Commission.

In the following Euratex, Textranet and AUTEX shared their opinions on the experience with the current research and innovation support programmes as well as their needs and wishes for the future programmes. These opinions will be integrated over the coming weeks into a common position paper to be presented at various occasions to EU policy makers involved in the preparations for the future programmes over the coming months.

The conference also highlighted the various successful collaborations that the Textile Technology Platform has built with Technology Platforms in related sectors such as BioTex, ManuTex or the Alliance4Materials and Consumer Goods Research Initiatives. The second day of the conference was entirely dedicated to a demonstration of how innovative textiles help solving major societal challenges and thereby successfully target significant global growth markets such as health, energy, infrastructure, transport, security, food and water.

The chairman of the Textile ETP Mr. Dick Hendriks summarised the achievements of the platform during 2010 and early 2011 and gave an outlook on a number of new activities which will be launched during 2011, such as a European Textile Technology Marketplace or a number of important showcases of the results of European textile research at upcoming events like Techtextil-Texprocess or ITMA.

The event was preceded by an information session of the CrossTexNet ERA-Net. In this project public research funding agencies from 17 European countries or regions joined forces to fund cross-border textile research projects. During 2010, the first year of operation of CrossTexNet, 12 projects were selected for funding and will start during 2012. The 2nd call for project proposals has been launched on 1 March 2011 and 11 funding agencies will allow textile companies and research organisations in their countries/regions to bid for project funding.
