According to a statement, the Pakistan Towel Manufacturers Association of Pakistan (TMA) has called upon the government to form a strong lobby amongst the European Union members to get the trade concessions declared by the EU for Pakistan implemented.
TMA stated that, considering the damage caused by the floods last year, EU announced several trade concessions for Pakistan, and since then the value-added textile sector is keenly looking ahead to early execution of the same.
Disappointedly, this announcement for concession by the EU was opposed by some of the countries like Bangladesh, India and Paraguay, owing to which it was decided to resend the draft to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for review during the reconciliation meeting to be held in March 2011, but then the meeting failed to deliver any positive outcome.
TMA further stated that, with a view to push for their demands at the WTO level, the association has got in touch with concerned authorities like Ministry of Textile Industry, Foreign Office, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), Ministry of Commerce and Pakistan's Economic Minister at the WTO; otherwise the country may loose the beneficial package.
