Southern Province Governor, Kumari Balasooriya recently while speaking at inauguration of the two day handloom and textile exhibition-cum-sale in Galle, stated that, the handloom industry which experienced a sharp fall, has revived and has posted sizeable growth in the domestic as well as foreign markets.

The Galle District Secretariat and Galle Deputy Industrial Secretariat of the Department of Textile Industries had jointly organized the fair at Galle District Secretariat, for promoting and popularising the handloom textile industry's products amongst people.

She said that, the handloom textile industry is deeply rooted in Sri Lanka, and hence their focus and concern should remain concentrated on highly export oriented rural based industry.

She further emphasized that; Sri Lanka should study and implement the advanced strategies of other countries like India and Bangladesh, where the industry is doing extremely well.

She further said that, owing to important provision for employment of rural females, which is helping these ladies to earn high returns, the handloom textile industry in the country has achieved high socio-economic significance.

With their unique characteristics, hand woven textiles distinguish themselves from other textile goods; the Governor said and added that, these are cotton based textiles that provide a smooth feel and soothing comfort to the person wearing it.
